Portrait Gallery and Commissions

Welcome to my portrait gallery. I enjoy doing portraits because it's a chance for patrons to specify exactly what they want in a meaningful subject. Notice that this is usually the reason most artists give for not accepting portraits or commissions of any kind. But for me nothing beats hearing the reaction of a happy patron. The first thing that makes a patron happy is getting the portrait to look just how the patron sees the person. But my portraits add an addtional feature in that my eye always seeks for the character of the person. I cannot explain why or how this happens, but my patrons are always delighted by this and usually mention it as their reason for returning for more portrait work. So with this in mind, let me explain the three types of portraits that I do. THREE TYPES OF PORTRAITS First I paint the traditional formal portrait. This is the type that everyone is familiar with. This is appropriate for family, friends, business associates, professionals, etc. I have a small example of a formal portrait below. And the portrait of the marine at left is also a formal portrait. The second type of portrait I do is called a montage portrait. This portrait contains several subportraits on one canvas that captures the subject in significant activities and at different ages. It is almost a biography of the subject on canvas. You can see an example of it below. The third type of portrait I do is a genre portrait. Genre means "slice of life". It pictures a moment, albeit usually a very significant moment in the life of the subject. A genre portrait can actually be a special day in the childhood of an adult, such as the example pictured below. Genre portraits look like a Norman Rockwell illustration because the are "scenes" that include friends and family from the person's present or past. Often it depicts a special family tradition. Genre portraits are extremely exciting to the patrons because many different people are often included in the picture. If you would like to commission a specific portrait type or if you would like more details on a specific portrait type just click your cursor over the picture of that type below. You will be linked to a page that will answer most of your questions and that will show you how to contact me or my agent if you are interested in proceeding with a commisssion portrait.
