Formal Portraits

As I stated in the Portrait Gallery page, formal portraits are appropriate for any type of portrait: family, friends, executive, etc.  But the name formal portrait does not mean the portrait must be formal.  The portrait pose can be as informal or formal as you like.  It can be a single subject or a group subject, with realistic background or with just a color background.  Here are some of the points most people want know before they commission a formal portrait:
Will you paint from photos or from a live sitting?  Most people prefer their painting to be done from photos.  But some want to sit for at least part of the portrait because they want to see what it's like.  Either way is fine and produces equal results.  Painting from photos is more convenient.  But several photos work better than just one.  However you will need to select your favorite photo as the base reference picture.  I can scan the photos and return them to you immediately if necessary.  Photo size is not important.  I can enlarge them after scanning.
How should the pose appear?  The pose can be anyway you like.  I can show you pictures of traditional poses if you need a reference point.  If you already have a favorite photo to paint from, the pose question is settled.  Just remember that the pose should express the subjects personality.
What size will the portrait be?  That will be determined by where you will be hanging the picture and how much of the subject will be included in the picture.  If you are hanging it in a large office narthex, it could be near lifesize.  Portraits are classified as Busts (head and shoulders), Half Figure (including the hands), 3/4 Figure (including the knees, sitting or standing), and Full Figure (which means the entire figure, sitting or standing).
